Critical update for the 2018 Tour de Gracetown with effect from 1030 Hrs 26 September 2018

We have been able to release with approval provided in writing from:

  • Main Roads WA Bunbury
  • City of Busselton

With effect from 2018 – Main Roads WA has rescinded TdG’s traditional route comprising of Caves Road which was previously a staple of our Event.  This despite positive and robust discussions about our Safety Vehicle methods which we implemented some 5 years previously as well as our Wave Start in groups.

That said,  the implementation of the new Road Traffic Act which requires the “1 metre separation of Cyclists from other Road Users” no longer permits Caves Road to be used for safety reasons, which we the Board acknowledge albeit with a level of sadness and regret.

As such the route for 2018 is moving forward and has been amended over the past three weeks through Intensive consultation to preserve the essence and qualities of the Tour de Gracetown which we all hold dear.

We wish to announce the following developments :

  • New 108.5 km (long distance) and new 58 km (short distance) route mapped and planned by John Sofield who is our Founding Board Member and resident of Gracetown;
  • Continued commencement of the event at Gracetown Hall (as it has always been).
  • Completion of the event (long and short route) at Juniper Estate Winery, Margaret River where post ride festivities are being organised.
  • New route proves a new challenge to new and existing riders of Tour de Gracetown and incorporates our long secret desire to be associated with the great vineyards in the South-West
  • Later start for the 2018 Event being 8 am instead of 7 am to allow participants to ‘roll down’ to Gracetown.
  • Provision of early parking facilities at Juniper, Margaret River so that you are able to ride down (roll down) to Gracetown for the 8 am start
  • Most importantly – creation of an end of event where your family and friends can be part of the celebrations.

This notice is intended for participants already registered, and it is our intention from the 27th September 2018 to outline the changes in our registration page and our associated Social Media on Facebook as Tour de Gracetown and this Website.

Appended below are the new route links:

Shorter Distance: 58 km

Longer Distance 108.5 km

There is no other South West touring event like the Tour de Gracetown and now in its 13th year – it grows from strength to strength.

We are proud of the fact that we are probably one of the original Western Australian based ride events that donate our proceeding to local charities.  To make it uniquely Australian – the entire event management team as well as associated companies working towards the success of TDG are also Australian and we ensure that our event contributes to the local infrastructure and the economy.1V9A4922_WM_Resized_WEB

We are definitely not a road race but instead a social community ride for charity – and we have since 2015 created realistic average speed groups so that riders who are signing up can self-seed themselves and also invite their friends to sign up appropriately.

The commencement times and average speed categories are appended in the sign up section.  We are also encouraging as many groups to attend and ride in YOUR colors whilst at the same time also supporting the charity by pre-purchasing our Event Jersey that you can then use in the course of the year to continually remind the cycling community about the Tour de Gracetown.

We are equally fortunate to have great synergy partners in this year’s event namely Glen Parker Cycles, and the Perth Integrated Health Cycling GroupCafé 2 U Kenwick Maddington, Reids MeatsThe Good Grocer and Perth Integrated Health sports medicine,  they have together combined their expertise and experience to ensure that this TDG will be one to celebrate with the somber focus that our ride event is for a cause and that of women suffering from cancer.

Those with GPS enabled computers can also look forward to the provision of turn by turn GPX and TCX files! To download the Tour De Gracetown GPS/TCX files visit out Downloads Page.
